At age 80, music historian and performer John Lomax III has become the oldest American artist to release a debut recording and he’s setting his sights on a GRAMMY® nomination.
To help expand his reach among the general public and voting members of the Recording Academy (N.A.R.A.S.), Lomax has partnered with two publicity firms, True North Publicity (Nashville) to elevate Lomax’s national profile, while California-based FYC will focus exclusively on his GRAMMY® campaign.
“I have several book and film projects in the works,” said Lomax, “but my top priority is earning a finalist nomination for the 2026 GRAMMY® Awards in the Folk and/or Americana categories for my album American Folk Songs.”
Lomax’s work continues a 149-year, four-generation family legacy dedicated to discovering, recording, preserving, and sharing unique American music and artists, both privately and for the Library of Congress.
“My uncle, Alan Lomax, and his daughter, Dr. Anna Lomax Wood, have received six GRAMMY® nominations and one win between them. I hope to become the third Lomax recognized by the Recording Academy.”
ABOUT JOHN LOMAX III:
John Lomax III is a celebrated music journalist, artist manager, and third-generation folklorist whose life's work honors one of America's most influential musical family legacies. As the grandson of John A. Lomax and son of John Lomax Jr., he carries forward a family tradition responsible for preserving hundreds of American folk songs whose recordings are now housed in the Library of Congress.
Throughout his career, Lomax has helped shape the careers of iconic artists like Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, and Kasey Chambers, while also chronicling country and folk music as a journalist and author. His award-winning contributions have made an international impact, earning him the Country Music Association’s Jo Walker-Meador International Award.
Lomax now presents Lomax on Lomax, a dynamic performance blending personal stories, archival material, and live music to illuminate his family’s pivotal role in American folk history. He is also developing a presentation highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of the Lomax women. His latest album, American Folk Songs is currently being promoted for Grammy consideration in the Folk category.
